Ocean Beach would like to join many of the other San Diego beach communities that have a children's playground and adult fitness area adjacent to the ocean. It would be wonderful for the residents and families that live in OB as well as the thousands of people that visit the beach.
At an OB Town Council meeting, Ocean Beach lifeguards and firefighters suggested constructing an adult fitness area in Saratoga Park - a location these first responders often work out at without any equipment. The Town Council notified the OBCDC (the group in Ocean Beach that primarily handles capital improvement projects) and the OBCDC decided to make this project a top priority in combination with a children's play area that has been part of the community plan for some years.
After raising funds for site survey, design and permitting costs, the OBCDC awarded the RFP to LdG Landscape Architects located in Point Loma to work on a preliminary design based off a public workshop held in 2014. Community feedback was incorporated into the plan via several public design charrettes, and the overall footprint of the project was reduced to allow for continued sporting activities on the park lawn. The current design utilizes just 8% of the existing park area.
This project has the support of all OB community groups - OB Mainstreet Association, OB Town Council, OB Planning Board, and the OB Community Foundation.
It's the belief of the OBCDC that this children's play area and adult fitness equipment will greatly enhance the quality of life for Ocean Beach residents and tourists alike.
